CBD for Chronic Pain

CBD for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a significant health challenge. A new study by the CDC reported that 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain.

Pain patients often rely on over-the-counter or prescription medications for relief. CBD therapies are now being used by more and more people to treat chronic pain as an alterative.

Chronic pain is defined as

"pain on most days or every day in the past 6 months." Nearly 20 million (about 7.5%) experienced high-impact chronic pain, defined as "limiting life or work activities on most days or every day in the past 6 months."

Pain patients often rely on over-the-counter or prescription medications for relief. CBD therapies are now being used by more and more people to treat chronic pain as an alternative.

CBD, a type of cannabinoid, a natural chemical found in cannabis works in the body to reduce pain, inflammation, and overall pain associated with many different health conditions. CBD doesn’t produce the “high” feeling often associated with cannabis, which is caused by a different type of cannabinoid called THC.

The human body naturally manufactures its own cannabinoids similar to CBD, called endocannabinoids. They work within the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to regulate just about everything in the body including pain management. If any of these normal functions become unbalanced, the body will synthesize, or combine, the cannabinoids it needs to restore balance throughout the body.

Research has shown that the ECS system will also recognize and respond to cannabinoids from external sources. The interaction between CBD and the ECS system creates anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects that help with pain management.

Common types of chronic pain include:

  • Cancer pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Low back pain
  • Migraines
  • Multiple sclerosis pain
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Temporomandibular disorder (often referred to as “TMJ”)

If you’re considering CBD therapy for pain relief, talk to your doctor to discuss whether it’s suitable for you and what the safest way to incorporate it into your pain management plan.
